A report has just come out on Uruguay’s energy costs, in which I highlight the cost of electricity above.
By way of international comparison, 29.4 US cents per Kwh for Uruguay, 23 US cents for UK, 16 US cents for USA.
Uruguay’s neighbours seem to be doing much better. The wind is still blowing in Uruguay, but Uruguayan consumers are not getting much benefit. The usual cautions must apply: exchange rates have an impact, some governments subsidise the prices to win political support, and markets for “green” energy are usually manipulated in the hope of increasing take-up, by off-loading the backup costs of intermittent supplies, but the general picture is clear. If people talk to you about harvesting free energy from the wind, check your bills carefully.
