Last night I went to hear some old guys talking about having eaten their friends. I had met one of them, but it was the first time I had seen the others in the flesh, and flesh has a big part to play in this story.
It's interesting what a visceral reaction we have to this topic. Was there ever a culture that was completely indifferent to what happens to the bodies of their dead?
The worst thing is that they were actually pretty close to a safe location. We became human when we buried our dead with those trinkets they would have liked, or perhaps would need in the next imagined world.
